about

Multifaceted Lagos based Afro-fusion act Tim Lyre shares his first release of 2021, ‘Real’. The intensely vulnerable record, situated somewhere between neo-soul and afro-futurism, is the first single off his upcoming debut album Worry <.

In ‘Real’, the singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer spares no use of his poetry skills as he puts pen to rhythm and carries through a slow but intentional use of distinct instruments to achieve a dynamic bop with a soulful backdrop in the tune. In his own words, “Real is a song about the emotional nuances between two people in a relationship or situation-ship as it were. It’s an attempt to say all the things typically left unsaid."

Early support from BBC Radio 1Xtra (Jamz Supernova), Worldwide FM (Tone), Legacy FM, Croydon FM, The Beat FM, Hot FM Lagos.

Building a growing fanbase in Nigeria, Ghana and South Africa, Tim Lyre has been an integral part of the alté renaissance and has consistently churned out top tier alternative Afro-influenced music, including the Senpai EP that featured MOJO, PrettyboyDO & AYLØ, which was recently featured in Tems’ Africa Month playlist on Apple Music. Tim has racked up over a million streams across digital platforms, having worked with the likes of Fasina, July Drama and Minz.

Tim’s highly anticipated debut album Worry < sees the budding Lagos artist flex his musicality across neo-soul, afrobeats, downtempo and trip-hop in an incredible new direction for afro-fusion music. The project was mixed by Sam Harper (Wizkid - MIL), mastered by Grammy nominated Frank Merritt at The Carvery Studios in London (Fela & Seun Kuti), and will be released under London-Johannesburg based label Outer South.

lyrics

[Intro]
Yeah,
Woah
1,2

[Verse 1]
Well this is intense,
It’s quite unusual I find myself in this position Right before is usually where it ends love And so this really makes no sense but now I guess we’re both intent
On seeing how this works and where it goes And so we’re just gonna pretend like We’ve never known the bitter end, I know say when e reach-e morning You’re still the only one I’m calling I upset you, you ignore me
Wahala dey here, I’m finished
Eko n mo wa, Iwo n na pound sterling, Iru Ife wo lo lo wa bayii
You have the power to deliver me
Here I am so willingly,
This is my proclivity
There and then she said to me
[Chorus]
Baby just breathe, (breathe)
Gotta let it go so deep (deep)
Then you’re gonna find release,
Then you’re gonna know what’s real
This is how it’s got to be (be)
Tell me what do you believe
Tell me it’s in what you feel,
That’s just how you know it’s real,
[Hook]
Real, real
Real, real,
Real, real, real,
Real, real
(you just let it ride, omo no be do or die)
(you just let it breathe, baby let it stabilise like)
(2x)
[Verse 2]
Yes I do get jealous,
Happens all the time
Often wish I lived in a world where I'd say with my chest that you’re mine, There’s nobody else
Wouldn’t that be nice
That would be the height of my alternate life,
From the breaking of the day
Deep into the night
Wey you a fi dey by my side, hold me tighter Wey you dutty wine fi lead to dinnertime and Yah
But
Know I had to come down from the clouds this time, This is what is real this time,
Take pity on my mind, I been stuck in there a while I lost track of the time
And I got lost in the minefield
Now that I realise I just
Cannot predict our lives,
I’ll sit back and enjoy the ride
Till I die
So listen to me now
[Chorus]
Baby just breathe,
Gotta let it go so deep
Then you’re gonna find release,
Then you’re gonna know what’s real
This is how it’s got to be
Tell me what do you believe
Tell me it’s in what you feel,
That’s just how you know it’s real,
[Hook]
Real, real
Real, real,
Real, real, real,
Real, real
